2009 New Jersey Schools of Character

Joseph J. Catena Elementary School: 2009 NJSOC Honorable Mention

L to R: Joyce Powell-President, NJEA, Cathleen Areman-Principal, Joe Mazzola-Executive Director, CEP

Joseph J. Catena Elementary School has integrated character education into the academic and social fiber of the school through the Positive Behavior Support Initiative. Respectful, responsible, and safe students can be observed in those following traffic patterns, using pleasant faces and voices, and through the kind exchanges and helpful attitudes between members of the Catena community. In their classrooms, teachers consistently model expectations using the language of the program and modeling behaviors so every student understands what it means to be respectful, responsible, and safe in every area of their building. Catena School stakeholders believe students must feel safe in their environment and trust their teachers so they are comfortable to take risks to reach their potential. Catena School is proud to provide students with an equal opportunity environment through a curriculum that fosters character development, differentiates to accommodate all learners, and encourages risk taking, creativity, self-expression, and reflection.

“Overall, positive behavioral support facilitates within students the desire to improve their character and be good citizens.” –Neal Dickstein, Assistant Superintendent
