Lore Elementary School: 2009 New Jersey School of Character

L to R: Phil Brown-Director, CSCD@RU, Patricia Womelsdorf-Principal, Ernestine Austin-Character Education Committee Co-Chair, Joyce Powell-President, NJEA

It is Lore Elementary School’s mission to create a functional, caring, and responsive learning community, where students could grow to be kind, develop self-control, and the capacity to learn and care for themselves and others, through the implementation of their UNITY program. The UNITY program has been expanded to include a social skills curriculum, physical education challenges, school-wide service learning, and parent and community involvement. Students at Lore Elementary School learn to resolve conflicts with confidence, dignity, and mutual respect. This sets the tone for a safe and peaceful school community. Teachers weave the threads of positive character development and skills throughout the academic curriculum, enhancing their lessons, and providing a sound educational, social, and emotional foundation, while fostering the concepts of community.

"Looking back at my years at Lore School, I have to say that the Unity Program is one part of school life that will always stay with me. As a kindergartener, we were shown how to model the unity words. As we grew older and had to model more of the words, we learned how to include, respect and be responsible. By modeling all of the words beyond our years at Lore, we can be successful students, good friends and good citizens." –Former Lore Elementary School Student (Partial quote)
