2009 New Jersey Schools of Character

Marlboro Memorial Middle School: 2009 NJSOC Honorable Mention

For the past three years, MMMS has implemented the Community of Caring model of character education. The program promotes social inclusion of all children, encourages civic responsibility, and emphasizes the teaching of values in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, and on the playing field. The five core values are integrated not only into the curriculum but also into every aspect of school life. This program encourages young people to reflect and act upon the core values as a guide to shaping their lives, illuminating goals, and making responsible decisions. The framework and components that have been implemented over the last three years include Values In and Across the Curriculum, Student Leadership and Forums, Family and Community Involvement, Service Learning/Community Service, Social Inclusion of All Students, and Staff Development/Ongoing Support.

“Becoming a Community of Caring School has provided our entire school community with a structure and framework under which to implement many character education initiatives. These initiatives have had significantly positive effects on our students, staff, and families.” – Dr. Joanmarie Penney, Principal
