2010 New Jersey Schools of Character

Alan B. Shepard Elementary School: New Jersey School of Character

In 2002, Alan B. Shepard Elementary School’s first character initiative was born: a “No Tolerance to Bullying Policy.” The following year, students learned how to confront a bully. The faculty soon realized the need to remove character-building from its isolated role. Thus, in 2004, the character committee, after input from students, staff, parents, and the community, chose to adopt the Character Counts! program. Respect, Trustworthiness, Caring, Fairness, Citizenship and Responsibility were broadcast everywhere around the school, and team members worked to solidify our program. Next came a partnership with Hamilton Township School District. Through the exchange of ideas and school visitations, our character education program began to soar to new heights. Our dedication and devotion to character education has resulted in the 2010 New Jersey State School of Character Award.
Shepard School is committed to sharing our experience and providing guidance and resources for other schools in our district, state and nation.
“My children related to the values being promoted as they progressed from kindergarteners through fifth graders at Shepard School. The concepts were user-friendly and perfect to carry over at home. The pillars also helped my children build self-esteem, and we continue to refer back to the pillars even after leaving Shepard School. This created a great foundation to promoting good character, and molded them into adults with strong value systems.”                                            - Stacy Shugrue, former parent
