2010 New Jersey Schools of Character

Lake Riviera Middle School: New Jersey Schools of Character

In response to the middle school child’s changing profile and their firm belief that they must take a more active role in addressing the social and emotional issues facing their students, Lake Riviera Middle School formed a Character Education Committee in the fall of 1999.  In recognizing this compelling need, they made
character education the keystone in Lake Riviera’s mission and over time it has become synonymous with their school culture. It is imbedded in their daily practices, curriculum, service-learning and community involvement.  In the years since Lake Riviera initiated their program, they have refined and strengthened their commitment to character education through service-learning.

“It is encouraging and supportive to hear community members compliment our student body as active concerned citizens who show respect for themselves and others.  I know just ten years ago this would not have been the case, character education has changed us inside and out from faculty, students and throughout the community.” – Ms. Mary Beth Prince, Teacher and Co-Advisor, National Junior Honor Society
