2010 New Jersey Schools of Character
Samsel Upper Elementary School: Honorable Mention
The teachers and administration of the Samsel Upper Elementary School (SUES) view character education as an integral part of each academic subject and feel that character education has a direct impact on the life of every single student within the school. Their school has a “Code of Conduct” which includes three values: respect, responsibility and resolve. These three values provide an umbrella for every action or non-action that a student takes. The students are taught to be “respectful’ of all, teachers, fellow students, custodians, secretaries, and auxiliary staff. “Responsibility” includes taking care of the physical space within the school, completing one’s homework, and coming to school prepared to learn. “Resolve” encompasses peer mediation, solving problems without resulting in the use of force, and knowing when to ask for assistance. They want character education to be an active, viable part of every student’s life. “ Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” – Mr. Edward Aguiles, Principal
